Project Description

The pair is called “Sisters in Hope” and shows a Native (red) and non-Native (white) woman walking together within the circle of sisterhood, united in the hope and struggle for respect, equality and justice. They are pictured with a “talking stick” made in a workshop at a Montreal centre for homeless youth called Dans la rue. The small black beads are from a dress my mother made and wore in the early 1930’s in Barcelona, Spain. Having lived through the horrors and deprivation of the Spanish Civil War, she saved everything. When she passed away, I found them among her sewing supplies and tucked them away for a special project. I cannot imagine a more special or meaningful project in which to use them than this one. Whatever our ethnic origins, we are all linked by empathy and shared values.
