Wild Flowers Come Round Dancing. For me there is nothing sweeter or more lovely than a field able to spread it’s seeds naturally blooming with tall grasses and plant medicines. Like our lost sister’s, modern society is quick not to see the beauty and so they cut them down. The buttons are from a box that was tossed to the trash by someone cleaning the house next door. An old man had lived there with his mother who passed years before-- these were her buttons. Some I suspect are at least 30 years old. It took this project for me to go through those buttons, selecting them, washing them and sewing them into place so they can join the round dance. by Michele Graveline

"missing you to the sun, the moon and the stars" in remembering cousing Romaka whose body was found, but her murderer was not. My grandmother and mother never stopped mourning for her. by Dolly Garza

Gawg, the porcupine, is a beautiful little animal, gentle, slow, with great defenses. Their quills were used by our women for many, many, generations to express the beauty and wonder of Mino Bimadiziwin, good life. The design represents the Seven Grandfather/Grandmother Teachings. When these teachings are strong again in our communities, our nations, we will not be losing our Sisters, Daughters to violence. Until that time, I will pray that each has the protection of Gawg, able to ward of the dangers that are represented by the twin to each of the Seven Grandfather/Grandmother Teachings. by Rainey Gaywish

These vamps are dedicated to my cousin Joyce Cardinal. They represent the ancestors from the 4 directions, the night, grandmother moon and 7 stars for the 7 grandfather teachings. You were not alone that night cousin as the footprints of moccasins represent and grandmother moon was watching over you. You deserved the moon and the stars and here they are. These are made with an incredible amount of love and I often think of you in all the work that I do. I do miss what could have been for you and am sad that you were taken from the family that night. by Connie Greyeyes

Nancy Gant

Seminole/Creek patchwork vamps handmade in a  heart design, made to represent the hearts of the women missing and how much we miss their love. Made in honor of Yolanda Blue Horse (Sioux) whose daughter was killed by a babysitter. by Nancy Gant

The pair is called "Sisters in Hope" and shows a Native (red) and non-Native (white) woman walking together within the circle of sisterhood, united in the hope and struggle for respect, equality and justice. They are pictured with a "talking stick" made in a workshop at a Montreal centre for homeless youth called Dans la rue. The small black beads are from a dress my mother made and wore in the early 1930's in Barcelona, Spain. Having lived through the horrors and deprivation of the Spanish Civil War, she saved everything. When she passed away, I found them among her sewing supplies and tucked them away for a special project. I cannot imagine a more special or meaningful project in which to use them than this one. Whatever our ethnic origins, we are all linked by empathy and shared values. by Mary Gervais
